The director said he’s made a lot of films and tried with much more innocent movies to get the Department of Defense to help, but that never happened again. The production got permission from the Army to use their commercial and Reitman is “still amazed” they were allowed to shoot at Fort Knox and given assistance. The writers ended up taking out all the dope humor and the script became “smarter.”Ģ. Movie studio Paramount “thought it was a good idea.” The movie ended up being distributed by Columbia Pictures instead, without Cheech and Chong (Reitman didn’t go into details about why Marin and Chong were out, but some sources say that the duo’s manager demanded too much control and/or money). The group (Reitman, Goldberg and Blum) figured there would be no problem talking to the comedy duo who had just done Up in Smoke. In what may be my favorite commentary tidbit ever, Writer Dan Goldberg ( Meatballs, Heavy Metal, Feds) recalled Reitman coming up to him at the Meatballs premiere and saying, “I have an idea for a movie: Cheech and Chong join the Army.” Lenny (Co-writer Len Blum ) and Dan said, “That’s a great idea” and for the next year they wrote Cheech and Chong Join the Army, though they never spoke to either Marin or Chong. Director Ivan Reitman ( Ghostbusters, Meatballs, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Six Days, Seven Nights, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) says people always tell him that this is their favorite movie of his. Throw in John Larroquette, John Candy and Warren Oates, mud wrestling and a couple of topless women, and you’ve got yourself one of the funniest, silliest comedies to ever drolly go behind the scenes of military life.ġ. There’s a John Winger in every platoon and the rest of the soldiers are usually thankful for him. What he does get right is the need for humor and the coming together of a group of vastly different people, thrown into a disarming situation. With a veritable who’s who of comedy gracing its cast, Ivan Reitman’s version of Army training has a few moments of truth and a lot of fun, wishful thinking.

Remember, there are over 18,000 different types of flies in North America alone, so the below list of 10 most common types of flies is a fraction of the flies you may come across in your region. Some flies look similar, but there are over 18,000 different species of flies in the US alone. Furthermore, large numbers of flies of any species in or around your home could also be a sign of a worse problem that needs addressing.īut before we get into how to get rid of different types of flies, let’s talk a bit more about the most common types of flies you may contend with in the United States. Lower classifications of flies, like mosquitoes, have also been known to cause diseases like West Nile Virus and Zika, just to name a few.įor this reason, fly control is very important. For example, some flies bite and are able to transmit harmful diseases that way, while other types of flies transmit illness when they land on foods that are to be consumed by people or animals.įlies have been known to transmit diseases like salmonella, cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, gastroenteritis, and conjunctivitis. The dangers of different types of flies can vary depending on their species. Many types of flies can carry serious diseases. Unfortunately, due to their unique (and somewhat gross) dietary habits, flies can also pose some risks to humans and pets. However, while flies are annoying, they are also beneficial insects and it’s very important to keep that in mind when considering how to get rid of different types of flies.įor example, many types of flies are natural decomposers, eating rotting plants and animal matter and helping reduce waste. Unfortunately, though they don’t live long, flies of all species are prolific reproducers, with many species able to lay up to 150 eggs at one time. Lower classifications of Diptera include many other species of insects, some of which will probably surprise you, but more on that further down.įlies, as a rule, generally have two wings, six legs, and a notoriously short lifespan. And while house flies are the top most common fly you’ll contend with when it comes to types of flies, there are lower classifications that are just as annoying and perhaps even dangerous. There are over 120,000 species of true fly throughout the world and 18,000 in the United States alone. True flies, or phylum Arthropoda, are an insecta class in the Diptera order. However, house flies are not the only type of true fly. These flies are the common flies we find buzzing around our homes, landing on our freshly prepared foods, and simply driving us bananas. When most of us think of flies, we think of house flies. "Eventually we managed to get it to work." "And they said no, that's not possible." He laughed as he launched into the game. "We challenged the team with the following: Are you able to create battle scenes with thousands of characters on-screen at the same time, in real-time, with you having full real-time touch control over all of these troops, and make all of these battles resolve within thirty to sixty seconds?" Reil recalled. Instead, NaturalMotion seems to like tackling tough problems. This is clearly not a developer that likes to rework previous game designs slightly. It's also interesting that each game NaturalMotion has created is something completely different than previous games. "Some two percent of the world's population has played that game." "CSR Racing now has 120 million users," said Reil. From My Horse to CSR Racing to Clumsy Ninja, NaturalMotion has produced a string of hit mobile games. In our meeting, Reil stressed that "Dawn of Titans is there to redefine action-strategy as a category." Bold words indeed, but NaturalMotion has the track record to back up such an attempt. The game's attention to detail looks to extend to strategic depth as well as surface beauty. Once on the battlefield, there are plenty of tactical choices to make, with positioning, use of different units against the best targets, and adroit use of special attacks being key elements to success. Like other popular mobile strategy games, you'll build up territories and use resources to better equip your fighting forces. Still, despite all the beauty, the game appears to have enough strategic depth to keep and hold the attention of gamers. Even on a big screen, we appreciated the beautifully rendered details, lighting effects, clouds, and detailed landscapes. previewed the game while chatting with Reil at Zynga's headquarters this week. "We challenged the team with the following: Are you able to create battle scenes with thousands of characters on-screen at the same time, in real-time, with you having full real-time touch control over all of these troops, and make all of these battles resolve within thirty to sixty seconds?" In addition to Echo, Titans and troops are brought to life with our Morpheme animation engine, giving in-game Titans and characters dynamic and unique, lifelike movements," Reil added in the blog post. "Echo, Dawn of Titans' proprietary engine, enables the game to feature thousands of units on-screen to achieve epic battles and run smoothly on mobile devices. The game is built using NaturalMotion's expertise with graphics and their very capable tools. Our team has designed every element of Dawn of Titans - from the trees, to the waterfalls, to the Titans, to the battles - to push the edge and create an entertainment experience that we believe supersedes anything found today in the Action Strategy category." The Dawn of Titans experience is set within a kingdom that looks, feels and sounds real. "Players build their kingdoms to fuel their army, raise Titans and fight battles at epic scale to capture territory. "In Dawn of Titans, players are immersed in a breathtaking, high fantasy world as they lead Titans into epic battles with thousands of soldiers," said Natural Motion CEO Torsten Reil in a blog entry today. Leading the way in that attempt is the new game from NaturalMotion, Dawn of Titans, which is heading to iOS and Android platforms in soft-launch only a few weeks from now, with general release to follow. Key to that strategy is the company's stated plan to publish from six to ten new titles this year, and be a leader in multiple categories of mobile games. Their goal is to hit 75 percent or more of the revenues coming from mobile by the end of 2015. "Our mobile bookings now account for 60 percent of our bookings, up from only 27 percent since the time I joined the company," CEO Don Mattrick said during the company's last earnings call. Zynga has come a long way towards that goal, ending 2014 as primarily a mobile game company. The intent, obviously, was to help Zynga in transitioning from being primarily a social game publisher to a mobile game publisher. After bringing in EA and Microsoft veteran Don Mattrick as CEO, Zynga purchased developer NaturalMotion, which had established itself as a very successful tools developer and as a mobile publisher. Zynga has been struggling to return to the kind of profits it was generating when social games were riding high several years ago. And it’s quite ‘cheap’, since it uses an existing model trained for a different purpose. It seems they’ve already done a pretty good job of filtering out most of the irrelevant/malicious sketches that were surely rampant in the raw data.īut this approach was able to easily identify a subset of sketches containing a high density of overlooked graffiti, scribbles, and irrelevant sketches. Google described their dataset as being ‘individually moderated’, and you can scroll through the examples here for a long time before hitting any graffiti (and if you do find any, you can even click it to ‘flag as inappropriate’). You can browse a gallery of all the bottom 400 flamingos here (warning: contains a few NSFW sketches). Flamingos do bend their heads down low like that, but when asked to draw a flamingo, almost no-one thinks to pose it with its head below the horizon. The drawing above is another good example. Right: The American flamingo, illustrated by by John Audubon. God bless these artists, they really tried. We can broadly classify our worst birds into a few groups. To quote Tolstoy, happy flamingos are all alike, but every garbage flamingo is garbage in its own way. Because we’re ranking by probability, we should in some sense expect the most ‘typical’ sketches here, rather than the most beautiful. those assigned the highest probabilities:Īudubon they ain’t, but these are at least mostly recognizable as flamingos. Good flamingosīefore we roast Quickdraw’s least gifted flamingo-drawers, let’s look at some of the ‘best’ flamingo sketches - i.e. It seems reasonable that the sketches the model assigns the lowest probabilities should be among the ‘worst’. So in addition to sampling from the learned distribution to generate new sketches, we can take existing sketches, and ask the model how probable it thinks they are. As I talked about in an earlier post on character-level RBMs, learning to generate new examples of X is basically the same as learning the probability distribution of X. For example:īut we can also repurpose them to get some insight into existing human-generated sketches. These models were trained to generate new sketches. What if we want to automatically identify the jankiest flamingos in the dataset? Sketch-RNN as probability estimatorĪlong with the datasets, Google has released some pre-trained models that use the Sketch-RNN architecture described in this paper. It's, um, a viking ship with a chicken carved into the prow? In this post, I’ll just be looking at sketches in the ‘flamingo’ category. Not long ago, Google released a dataset of some of the millions of sketches people have drawn so far over 345 categories. Have you played Quick, Draw! yet? It’s basically Pictionary, played against a neural network, and it’s a lot of fun. Sarah went so far as to suggest that the Times’s curation goes beyond a preference for books acquired at independent retailers-a theory posited by many I spoke to. “There is quite a bit taken into consideration-i.e., are the book sales mostly bulk buys? Are they mostly indie bookstore sales? Are they mostly Amazon sales? Even which list the book would be considered for has a huge effect.” For example, whether a book is considered for the Hardcover Nonfiction weekly list or the Advice, How-To, & Miscellaneous weekly list might affect whether it becomes a best seller at all. However, the truth is, it's much more editorialized,” Sarah*, a book publicist who has worked at two Big Five houses, suggested to me. “To my knowledge, The New York Times tracks sales of books, and the sales are what is ‘supposed to’ decide where those books sit on the list. She also believes that The New York Times uses data from BookScan, employing it to flag books with a large percentage of bulk orders that might detract from the paper's mission to represent individual consumer purchases.Īlthough the list claims to be a numerical ranking with full autonomy from The New York Times Book Review, some of the sources I spoke with believe that an element of editorial curation must be at play. They can't simply rely on the individual stores,” she said.Įloise*, a book publicist I spoke to who spent several years working within the Big Five (the five largest publishing houses: Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, and Macmillan), theorized that The New York Times seems “to look for signs that a book is selling large quantities organically-that is, individual copies being purchased from a variety of booksellers… with an emphasis on independent bookshops and geographic diversity.” “I can't imagine they do not use BookScan at all. The Times denies the use of any services that aggregate data, but according to Schmidt, those in the industry believe otherwise. Kathleen Schmidt, president of KMSPR, a book publicity and marketing firm, speculates that The New York Times’ main data sources are Amazon, ReaderLink (a distributor for big box stores like Target, Walmart, and Hudson News), individually reporting stores, and BookScan (one of publishing’s main data providers). The list of theories is longer than the actual list of best sellers. McGrath, an assistant professor of English at Temple University who teaches a course on the history of the best seller, compares The New York Times’ list to the original recipe for Coca-Cola: “We have a pretty good idea of what goes into it, but not the exact amount of each ingredient.” In The New York Times’ own words, “The weekly book lists are determined by sales numbers.” It adds that this data "reflects the previous week’s Sunday-to-Saturday sales period" and takes into account "numbers on millions of titles each week from tens of thousands of storefronts and online retailers as well as specialty and independent bookstores." The paper keeps its sources confidential, it argues, "to circumvent potential pressure on the booksellers and prevent people from trying to game their way onto the lists." Its expressed goal is for “the lists to reflect what individual consumers are buying across the country instead of what is being bought in bulk by individuals or associated groups.” But beyond these disclosures, the Times is not exactly forthcoming about how the sausage gets made. No one outside The New York Times knows exactly how its best sellers are calculated-and the list of theories is longer than the actual list of best sellers. benzene, toluene, vinyl chloride, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride, sulphur oxides, chloroacetic acid, aldehydes, mixtures of inorganic acids, and organic substances, mercury vapors, radioactive iodine, organic compounds of iodine (Iodomethane, 129, 131), radioactive particles, etc. The filter canister in connection with a suitable respirator or PAPR provides protection against solid and liquid particles, pepper spray (OC), smoke-producing substances, radioactive particles, bacteria and rickettsia, fungi, toxins, viruses, riot control agents (lachrymators, sternutators, vomiting agents), blister agents (vesicants), choking agents, blood agents, nerve agents, incapacitants, herbicides, pesticides, and TIC, such as bromoacetone, CS, CR, CN, CNC, CNS, CA substances, organic compounds of arsenic - diphenyldichlorarsine - CLARK I (DA), diphenylcyanoarsine - CLARK II (DC), adamsite (DM), diphenyldichlorarsine (DA), ethyldichlorarsine (ED), methyldichlorarsine (MD), mustard gas (H), sulphur mustard gas (HD), T-mustard gas, Q-mustard gas, nitrogen mustard gases (HN1, HN2, HN3), lewisite (L), mixed mustard gas (H-L), phosgene oxime (CX), phosgene (CG), diphosgene(DP), chloropicrin (PS), hydrogen cyanide (AC), cyanogen chloride (CK), arsine (SA), G-agents: sarin (GB), cyclosarin (GF), soman (GD), tabun (GA), IVA (GV), V-agents: VX, VR, VE, VG (amiton), VM and toxic industrial chemicals such as: fumes of organic or inorganic acids, hydroxides, organic solvents with a boiling point above 65° C, ammonia, amines, inorganic and acid gases, agricultural chemical combustion gases, other toxic substances, e.g. EN 1) NBC-77 SOF 260 99.999 >99.999Ģ) The filter was tested on dolomite dust cloggingģ) Radioactive iodine and its organic compound - methyliodide¹³¹ acc. Using Lacanian discourse theory, and specifically Lacan’s fifth discourse on capitalism, I assess the film’s gloomy meditation on the dehumanizing, anti-social, and dissatisfying nature of hypermodernity with its imperatives to enjoy a seemingly endless supply of object-commodities, and explore what the film articulates about contemporary modes of dealing with jouissance and the implications for the woman subject.Īdams, P. “Non-rapport” is Lacan’s term for the real, non-representable gap at the heart of sexual relationships and is what causes discourses which delimit social bonds and modes of enjoyment ( jouissance). This paper assesses the themes of spectatorship, consumption, womanhood, sublimation, jouissance, and sexual non-rapport elicited by the film. The film is an unsettling account of a young woman whose subjective emergence into cannibalism occurs in a sadistic world of “Dionysian excess” at university. The French film Raw (2016), written and directed by Julia Ducournau, has received critical acclaim as a contemporary female coming-of-age horror film with feminist and critically reflective leanings. |
